The Epistemic Contract

How the framework decides what it may compute, classify, interpret, and publish

The constitutional rule. Everything below is machinery for holding it.

This document does not teach the engine. It teaches the discipline that governs what the engine's outputs are allowed to mean. The mathematics establishes what is computed. It never, by itself, establishes what a computation refers to in the world. Those are two different questions, answered by two different kinds of evidence, and the entire purpose of this contract is to keep them from collapsing into each other.

The discipline is not new to the framework. It is already enacted, one result at a time, in the algebra. What follows generalizes that local habit into a governing rule and adds the one thing the algebra cannot contain: a measurement layer that asks whether an output can even be classified from the information available.

The stack: from proof to published claim

Every claim the framework makes occupies a position in a single vertical order. A claim may never borrow the standing of a layer above or below its own.

Architecture
The deterministic particle system. It expands with every fold and never reproduces an earlier configuration. It has no recurrence and no fixed point to have.
Projection
A chosen observable read off the architecture: the Field-State sequence, the propulsion sequence, coherence, and so on. A projection is not the architecture.
Trajectory
The ordered values of one projection across the folds k0 through k4. A trajectory belongs to exactly one observable.
Specification status
Are the components the trajectory rides fixed and reproducible, or provisional behind an open gate?
Observability assessment
Do the observed values carry enough information to distinguish this class from its competitors? If not, the output is Undetermined, not a class.
Classification / Undetermined
A class exists only once observability is satisfied. Otherwise the honest output is deferral, which is a first-class result, not an error.
Interpretive hypothesis
A proposed correspondence between a class and something in the world. Proposed, not established. It carries no weight until the next layer clears.
Validation status
Has the class been shown to correspond to an independently observable reference variable? Until then the hypothesis stays a hypothesis.
Published claim
Exposed only when specification is stable, observability is satisfied, and validation is demonstrated. Three independent conditions, not one.

The archetype branches off Projection at k0 and needs no trajectory: it is a classification of a single structural state, not of an evolution of states. It runs its own three-condition gate in parallel.

The Projection Principle

A classification describes the behavior of a chosen projection of the architecture, never the architecture itself.

Recurrence, stabilization, oscillation, and trend are properties of the observable through which the architecture is viewed. The underlying particle system expands deterministically and does not recur, so when a Field-State sequence "returns," what returns is the residue projection, not the system. This is not a weakness to hide. It is the precise thing to say.

The principle is already proven in the algebra. Theorem 3.8 sends the fusion structure onto a finite abelian group, and the corollary states it plainly:

The Projection Principle is the generalization of that theorem from one operation to every observable the framework reads.

Three principles, three different questions

Most frameworks conflate these. Ours gains its strength by refusing to. A claim can satisfy one, two, all three, or none, and it must never inherit one from another because both come from the same engine.

A classification may only be computed from specification-stable components.

Can this result even be reproduced?

Observability Principle

A classification may only be assigned when the observed data contain sufficient information to distinguish it from competing classifications. When depth is insufficient, the correct output is Undetermined, not an inferred class.

Can this result actually be determined?
03 · Science

Validation Principle

A classification may be interpreted as describing the external world only once an empirical relationship between the class and an independently observable reference variable has been demonstrated.

Does this result correspond to reality?
04 · Reporting

Transparency Principle

Every reported result exposes its specification, observability, and validation status. When any criterion is unmet, the framework reports that state explicitly rather than substituting an inferred class or an implied confidence.

How is the uncertainty communicated?

The first three govern when a claim may be made. The fourth governs how its uncertainty is shown. A mature instrument is not one that always returns an answer. It is one that knows when the evidence is insufficient and says so.

The Interpretive Boundary

The algebra already draws this line locally. This is the line drawn once, for the whole framework, and worded to forbid not only assertion but implication.

Interpretive Boundary

No theorem, proposition, corollary, or computed result establishes or implies an external, semantic, psychological, relational, operational, or predictive interpretation. Where interpretive resonance is noted, it is labeled Observation and carries no proof weight.

"Implies" is the load-bearing word. Without it, a reader can concede that an interpretation is not formally proven while still presenting it as the natural or necessary consequence of the theorem. The algebra already refuses exactly this, in Remark 3.8.2, where it calls the fusion identity a theorem of modular arithmetic and its resonance with the re-seeding reading an OBSERVATION, recorded but not proven. The failure mode it heads off is precise:

The second statement requires an independent interpretive definition and external validation. It is not downstream of the theorem. It is a different claim on a different line.

Declare the claim form before its falsification rule

The algebra's rule, that data can falsify but never establish a theorem, is exact for universal deterministic claims. It does not transfer unchanged to empirical claims, which come in different logical forms.

One counterexample retires a fully specified universal claim. It does not retire a probabilistic association. So the validation layer must state what kind of claim it is making before it states what would falsify it, or it silently imports the algebra's universal-claim logic onto claims that do not have that shape.

The asymmetry the algebra names, falsify with one, establish with many, is preserved. What changes is that "one" only counts when the claim is universal and its conditions are fully specified.

Two ontologies, and where measurement sits

Measurement is forced out of the mathematics. MATH-001 declares its dataset section reserved and empty, so a document that constitutionally holds no data cannot answer a question about what the data can decide.

But measurement does not gate every ontology. A formal object may be defined before it is observable, the way mathematics defines objects whose presence cannot yet be decided from finite data. So there are two ontology layers, and measurement sits between them:

Formal ontology
Which kinds of objects and relations the framework's type system permits. A candidate class may be named here before it can be observed.
Measurement
Operationalization, resolution, minimum evidence, decidability, deferral. The first point at which data touches the framework, as a question of decidability.
Interpretive / empirical ontology
What an observable class is proposed to represent. You cannot assign this being to an object you cannot decide from the available information.

Measurement must precede any ontology that claims an observable class has interpretable existence in the instrument. It need not precede the purely formal definition of a candidate object. Where the framework's existing ontology paper is primarily interpretive, Field States, archetypes, trajectory and interaction meaning, the governance order is simply:

The evidence profile

This is the whole contract in one object. Every claim carries three independent marks. A claim is published only where all three are met, and no mark is inherited from a neighbor because they share an engine.

The single table communicates more than the word "published" ever could. It shows the evidentiary state of each claim without letting any one of them borrow the standing of another.

A claim can also be a bundle rather than one item. The algebra's open problem on the predictive load of the FS9 kernel is really four claims, and each has its own row: a proved quotient structure, a computable membership predicate, a distance function that may not yet be defined, and an empirical hypothesis connecting either to an external variable. "Observable" collapses the moment you separate deciding kernel membership, which the FS coordinate already settles, from deciding whether membership predicts anything, which has no measurable criterion until an outcome is defined. Decomposition is exactly what the contract requires.

Where we stand, and why that is the point

Read the profile honestly and it says something a lesser framework would hide: the trajectory and interaction classes are held at the specification line behind the operator-table gate, the compatibility output has not yet cleared its observability test, and even the archetype, which is computed and decidable, has an open validation line until a reference variable is demonstrated. The instrument's most exposed surface today is narrow.

That is not the framework failing. That is the framework distinguishing between what has been measured, what has been computed, and what has been demonstrated with sufficient evidence for classification, and reporting the distinction rather than papering over it. Refusing to classify prematurely, and refusing to publish a class whose evidence line is open, is the control working, not the control missing.

The one sentence to leave with. Formal structure may generate a mathematically valid projection without licensing an interpretation of that projection. Every layer, principle, and mark in this document exists to hold that line, per claim, so that nothing the engine produces is ever read as more than its own evidence permits.
