They Knew

There is a version of this story that is tragic but accidental. That is not what happened.

This is the part that requires clarity.

Because there is a version of this story that is tragic but accidental, a cultural overemphasis on logic and technical skill that happened to coincide with the development of AI, producing an unfortunate collision no one planned. That version is comfortable. It distributes no responsibility. It makes everyone a victim of circumstances and the future simply a surprise that arrived without warning.

That is not what happened.

The people who controlled the messaging about what skills mattered for human survival were not separate from the people developing the technology that would render those skills obsolete. They were, in significant cases, the same people. They occupied the same institutions, moved in the same circles, controlled the same capital. The corporate leaders who spent decades demanding a workforce optimized for cognitive output were simultaneously funding the research labs building systems designed to replace cognitive output.

The timeline is not ambiguous.

Serious artificial intelligence research has been in progress for decades. The institutions, academic, corporate, governmental, that shaped educational priorities, workforce development policy, and cultural values around what kinds of human beings were desirable were simultaneously aware of and often directly funding the development of systems that would eventually make those human beings redundant. This was not a secret kept from everyone. It was a secret kept from the people being shaped.

The Deskilling Served a Purpose

When you understand the technology development timeline, the deskilling looks different. It stops looking like a cultural accident and starts looking like preparation.

A population that has retained physical self-sufficiency is harder to control. People who can feed themselves, build shelter, sustain community, and meet their own basic needs without market participation are not fully capturable by economic pressure. You cannot threaten into compliance someone who does not need what you are selling.

A population that has been systematically stripped of those capacities, that depends entirely on supply chains, employment, and market access for its basic survival, is a population that must comply. Because the alternative is not inconvenient. The alternative is death.

The deskilling was not just about making people useful to the system in the short term. It was about making people captive to it in the long term.

The Emotional Suppression Served a Purpose

A population with intact emotional intelligence is a population capable of accurately perceiving what is being done to it. Emotionally attuned people can sense manipulation. They can read the gap between what is being said and what is actually happening. They build coalitions not based on formal authority but on genuine trust. They are, in short, much harder to manage at scale.

The suppression of emotional intelligence was not just about producing a certain kind of worker. It was about producing a certain kind of citizen.

One whose perceptual range had been sufficiently narrowed that the mechanisms of extraction could operate without interference.

You were trained to distrust your own felt sense of things. To require data before trusting perception. To dismiss the intuition that something was wrong as irrationality. That training served someone. It was not serving you.

The Pivot Confirms It

If the deskilling had been genuinely about preparing people for what the economy needed, then when the economy's needs changed, there would be acknowledgment of the cost of the previous preparation. There would be some accounting for what was suppressed, what was lost, what it cost the people who followed the instructions.

There has been none of that.

Instead, there has been a seamless, consequence-free pivot. The same voices that spent decades pathologizing emotional intelligence are now posting on LinkedIn about the importance of empathy in leadership. The same institutional culture that punished the capacities now being valorized simply rebranded without apology.

That pivot, its casualness, its complete lack of any acknowledgment of what it cost, is itself the evidence.

If it had been an honest mistake, there would be something that looked like reckoning. There is none. There is only the next set of instructions.

And the question you have to ask yourself is whether you are going to follow them.
